Thoughts on Small class sizes |

Being in grade 12, many of my classes, at least at the beginning of the year, were filled to capacity and beyond. Having an English class with just ten people has been a treat. It has made me realize that being part of small classes is what would suit me best in university and is partly why I chose to go to a small liberal arts college in the U.S. for my post-secondary education. The small class size has also showed me I enjoy English and the Social Sciences more than the Sciences, contributing to the difficult decision of going into International Relations instead of Biology or Chemistry. This class has made me more confident to speak up as well. The discussions we had about the IRPs and about each chapter in Behind the Scenes at the Museum have forced me to talk more in class since there are not as many people in it.

During one of the Behind the Scenes at the Museum discussions, we were talking about Footnote (ii) - Still Lives, there was a question about the differing perspectives revealed through the story of Bill Monroe. I remember being nervous to voice my answer but I realized that it was a small English class, therefore it was not as scary to speak. I talked about Nell not understanding the effects of war on men and caring more about the scared appearance of Frank than his feelings about the scares. After that, I felt more encouraged to talk in class because it was small enough to not feel overwhelmed or judged by other students. The discussions we had were insightful, interesting and allowed for the emergence of fresh ideas. I learned new and more thorough ways of analyzing the books and poems we read, making English very intellectually stimulating and enjoyable for me.
