Colloquies I am a relatively shy and self-conscious person, so I tend not to participate in class discussions during my courses. The colloquies helped to get me out of my comfort zone. I was able to talk about The Orenda and The Headmaster’s Wager, two books I know very well. It made me more comfortable to voice my ideas and I enjoyed the discussions that carried through the whole class. I appreciated the time I had to talk with other students who read the same books I did, and to be able to compare our ideas, come up with new thoughts and discuss the different perspectives we had of the events in each book.
Through the colloquies, I was able to openly discuss my opinions on the specific themes related to the book. In doing this, I realized that the way Joseph Boyden explained his characters and settings was a very detailed, descriptive, and emotional use of wording. It made me feel deep sympathy towards the events surrounding Snow Falls. THe Orenda One moment during the IRP experience that remained with me was at the end of The Orenda. When Snow Falls dies, I actually began balling my eyes out. I cannot recall a time where I have cried after reading a part of a novel, but that scene in The Orenda really touched me. It made me realize how powerful books can be. From just reading descriptive words with no visual aid, I was able to feel for the characters and connect with them as if they were my own family. The way Joseph Boyden described Snow Falls’ experiences lead me to feel very connected her character, so much so, that I was devastated when she died.
The highly detailed and descriptive writing style of novels, such as The Orenda, allows me to see examples of what I would like to achieve as I become a better writer. The Orenda is a book with which I am able to connect with well. In this way, I was better able to analyze the writing, and in doing so, I ended up discovering a lot more information on how to be able to write a good paper. Reading the novels this year, has allowed me to improve my ability to write essays and research papers because I learned techniques from great writers by reading books I really enjoyed. |
